Do you need a magmeter?

I want to cover a topic that we know a lot about. Magnetic flow meters used for metering liquids inside your facilities. They can be used as main metering devices or sub metering to help keep track of smaller processes. Flow meters are very essential for loop controls and for product reporting. They help in so many ways if you can justify the expense of installation with the value that having one will afford. Here are some key points to remember.

  • Install them in straight runs of pipe as far away as possible from turns, bends or other obstructions.

    • At a minimum you need 5 pipe diameters upstream and 3 downstream to do the best operations. Some manufacturers will say they can do less but this is still a general rule of thumb that will help you in the long run.

  • Keep them out of locations that can become flooded unless the flow tube is specifically designed to be submerged and approved by the manufacturer for that location.

  • Have a plan for getting the data the meter generates into some sort of control system. This means finding good paths for conduit from the flow converter box back to the control system.

    • This could also include just wiring directly to a VFD for flow control of a pumped process or to a control valve that accepts an analog signal.

We would be happy to help you install a flow control system and help you find the real value of doing it. Reach out and have RED help you in all your flow control needs.
